O'Neil she was in her high-school times when she took part in the auditions, auditioned for Canadian Idol's 3rd season during the first months of 2005. She made it to the top 100 rounds when judges applauded her voice. O'Neil received praise of high quality from her judges. She was a victim of significant loss in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted into the bottom three and second-bottom two places, respectively. They were stunned by the results and encouraged fans to vote for contestants with strong singing talents, like Melissa. O'Neil has been consistently delivering stellar performances since then, always finished in the top three. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced to the top two spots in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become her third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a phone call immediately from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
